H1N1 Influenza A (Swine Flu) Outbreak

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified several cases of Swine Influenza virus A (Swine Flu) in various parts of the country. It may be linked to cases of flu-like illnesses and numerous deaths reported in Mexico.
While the CDC continues to work with local and state health agencies to investigate these cases, they have determined that this virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human. However, at this time, it not known how easily the virus spreads between people.
Like seasonal flu, swine flu in humans can vary in severity from mild to severe. The CDC has stated that the virus was a never-before-seen mixture of viruses typical among pigs, birds and humans.
Anything we can do to help minimize the spread of germs that may cause illness makes good sense. Handwashing and hand sanitizing are especially critical to minimize the spread of germs during times of illness outbreak.
As with any infectious disease, the CDC is recommending precautionary measures for people residing in these areas:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or
school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
Because it is an evolving situation we recommend you go to CDC website http://www.cdc.gov/flu/swine/investigation.htm for updated information.
